Hilary, from Singapore

People often ask what our Apprenticeship Programme is like. The easiest way for us to explain this is to share Hilary’s experience. Hilary is from Singapore and came to study in the UK, then stayed long term. Her experience with Transformations helped her with the challenges of living in the UK. She says:

Back home in Singapore, I was part of the majority race and there was no limit to what I could aspire to; I could go wherever I felt God was calling me to lead or serve. It wasn’t until I came to the UK that I realised that that was privilege.

10 years of living here has eroded my confidence. In 500 Sundays, I have seen a person of colour preach only once, when visiting a Nigerian church in London. Over time, I came to believe that I wasn’t worthy of leadership, and it was my appearance that made me unworthy.

The Transformations Apprenticeship Programme changed all that for me. It gave us the space to be heard and valued, invested in me as a leader and gave me the opportunity to grow with other aspiring leaders of colour. The Apprenticeship programme has changed the leadership narrative I see in the UK and increased my confidence as a leader of colour in the British church.
